10 Rare Erotic Pochoir Prints by Gerda Wegener from Les Delessements d'Eros 1917 Mounted in 2 Glazed Frames

£1,975.00

Rare set of 10 rare erotic pochoir prints by Danish artist Gerda Wegener from Les Delessements d’Eros 1917, mounted in 2 glazed frames.

The circular & oval Art Nouveau artworks are presented in custom period mounts and depict stylised mythological & lesbian erotic scenes.

Very decorative Art Nouveau erotic illustrations that are reminiscent of the work of Aubrey Beardsley, and present very attractively mounted in 2 groups. Both the imagery and style seems very contemporary.

The title Les Delessements d’Eros means The Recreations of Eros.

The rare first edition of this fine suite of erotic pochoir plates issued in 1917. A second addition was issued in 1925.

This set includes 10 prints from the original issue of 12. Perhaps a selection made because of a layout decision when mounting into 2 frames, and also the 10 included are the strongest images from the set.

Attached to the reverse of one frame is a 1987 purchase invoice from The Maclean Gallery London.

The prints are in very good condition with strong colours. Some splits to veneer surface of the frames.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (1885 – 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter, known for her Art Nouveau & Art Deco style fashion illustrations and paintings that pushed the boundaries concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner Lili Elbe.

Gerda married fellow artist and transgender woman Lili Elbe (Einar Wegener), who was one of the earliest recipients of gender affirming surgery. The book & film - The Danish Girl - was based on Elbe’s life.

Each visible circular print is 13.3cm diameter. Each visible oval print is 16.5 × 12cm.

Frames W: 56.3cm x 43cm (visible mount: 47.7cm x 34.8cm.
