18th Century German Memento Mori Skull Crucifix Calvary Scene Sculpture
Impressive and large 18th Century German Memento Mori Skull Crucifix Calvary Scene Sculpture.
A striking Memento Mori skull with entwined snakes sits on an old book (Bible or the book of life) shaped base with claw feet. The cross in the form of a tree sprouts from the skull, while the crucified three-nail type corpus christi hangs at the top beneath the INRI sign. At the base of the cross standing on the skull is the Virgin Mary, whilst either side are Saint John the Evangelist and probably Saint Francis.
Sculpted in Boxwood & Fruitwood, the finely carved figures are a rich lighter colour wood contrasting against the dark skull, base and cross.
Probably Southern Germany from 18th Century.
Height: 52cm / Width: 19.5cm / Depth: 10.5cm.
Good overall period condition. The tips of fingers on one hand of St John seem missing (hardly noticeable) and two fingers of St Francis. The Virgin Mary is in good condition and Christ is excellent.
Displays very impressively.
The body of the cross is in the form of a trunk sprouting from a skull, a representation of the tree of life growing from the bones of Adam. It was believed that Adam was buried on Golgotha (Calgary), the same site in which Christ was crucified.
Above the crucified Christ is a parchment engraved ‘INRI’, affixed by the Romans in jest, it is an abbreviation of the latin ‘Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rēx Iūdaeōrum’ which translates as ‘Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews’.
Reserved for private devotion, this interesting crucifix gives an interpretation of the Tree of Life symbolising the sacrifice of Jesus for the redemption of the first Man and of Humanity.
