19th Century Italian Vanitas Memento Mori Marble Bust Wearing Roman Laurel Wreath & Robes

£3,995.00
sold out

Late 19th Century Italian Vanitas Memento Mori Marble Bust wearing Roman laurel wreath & robes.

Striking and detailed Vanitas skull wearing a laurel wreath crown in white Carrara marble, with Roman robes featuring Lion head detail in black marble, and white marble base.

Memento Mori (remember that you must die) is a Latin phrase, originating from the custom in ancient Rome when a general returned to the city after a war, triumphantly parading in the streets & collecting the honors that were given him by the crowd, he ran the risk of being overwhelmed by pride and delusions of grandeur. To prevent this from happening, behind his back, he pronounced the phrase: "Respice post te. Hominem te memento" ("Look behind you. Remember that you are a man").

Vanitas: the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, the certainty of death.

Excellent period condition.

62 x 40 x 23cm.

Ships from London. The base detaches making it easier to transport. International shipping is possible. For UK would recommend a shiply courier.
