£3,495.00
sold out

Italian Vanitas Memento Mori Marble Bust, in white Carrara marble with grey veins, on a black with white marbling base. Finely carved details. Death depicted in hooded draped cloak.

Memento Mori (remember that you must die) is a Latin phrase, originating from the custom in ancient Rome when a general returned to the city after a war, triumphantly parading in the streets & collecting the honors that were given him by the crowd, he ran the risk of being overwhelmed by pride and delusions of grandeur. To prevent this from happening, behind his back, he pronounced the phrase: "Respice post te. Hominem te memento" ("Look behind you. Remember that you are a man").

Vanitas: the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, the certainty of death.

Early 20th Century, from a private collection in Rome.

57cm.

Ships from London. Can be mailed or sent with shiply courier. International shipping possible.
